Role of Exercise in Weight Loss:
The daily calorie expenditure plays a pivotal role in either weight gain or weight loss. The total number of calories taken in minus the total number of calories burned in daily activities results in either a calorie deficit or calorie excess. Although weight gain and weight loss is not as simple as just a deficit or surplus in calories, the total calorie count is by far the most important.
Exercise of course burns calories from the action of the muscles. It stands to reason that exercise should be a key ingredient to any weight loss regiment. However, when the calorie count is tallied, it becomes evident that although exercise is important, it cannot play a huge role. The reason is that a modest exercise routine only burns a few hundred calories at best. This calorie expenditure can easily be wiped off with the intake of a small snack.
Therefore, one cannot rely on exercise as the pillar of weight loss since one needs to exercise a lot to make a difference, while even a slight diet intake deviation of a little extra food here or there will make a large difference in calorie intake.
Only if the intake of food and diet is modified and controlled adequately can there be any significant weight loss. Nonetheless, even though exercise should not be the main goal of a weight loss regime, there are many benefits of exercise that go beyond simple weight loss. Exercise builds and tones muscles, and muscles increase the basal metabolic rate, which means that more calories are burned even at rest. Again, although this cannot in itself lead to significant weight loss, it does make a small difference and every little bit counts. Furthermore, there are cardiac and general health benefits of exercise that go beyond weight loss, and a modest exercise routine is recommended for these reasons, as well as to maintain the weight that was lost in any diet program.
