Mediterranean Diet - Healthy Weight Maintenance:
Decades ago it became apparent that those living around the Mediterranean sea (Greeks and Italians) were healthier, slimmer, did not suffer from obesity, and lived longer. Other than genetic factors, it seemed that their diet played a major role.
One of the key ingredients of the Mediterranean diet is olive oil. Butter and animal fats are rarely used, and Greeks use olive oil almost exclusively as the main fat in every dish. Olive oil is not only unsaturated, but contains many other complex compounds that have been shown to have cardio-protective effects as part of a diet.
Although olive oil is a key ingredient of the Mediterranean diet, it is not the only factor. The larger component relies on the fact that the people of Greece and Italy do not typically eat processed foods, and eat what is locally available. The local availability of the region includes legumes and vegetables, fish, and small quantities of cheese and animal proteins. The relatively low intake of processed carbohydrates and animal fats, modest intake of fish, olive oil and no other type of oil, as well as large quantities of legumes and vegetables is the foundation of this healthy diet.
It is this combination of foods, and avoidance of specific harmful intake of animal fats and processed simple carbohydrates that makes the Mediterranean diet one that is healthy and a good way to keep off the weight and remain slender. A diet with a modest amount of olive oil, minimal animal products, a large quantity of unprocessed and locally grown legumes, fruits and vegetables, with no added simple sugars is the mainstay of the Mediterranean diet and good weight control.
